News from our Outpost in Poland

Milestone Complete!

Hi folks. It’s been a while, but I wanted to make sure that you all knew how development has been progressing recently.

In general it’s been fairly slow of late; mostly this is because I’m vacationing with my wife’s family in rural Poland, and it looks like none of the ISPs actually want to do the work involved with giving us a proper internet connection there. Two weeks ago we were told we’d be up & running in two weeks, but we still haven’t received the application paperwork, so it looks like a no-go; we’re now doing the ‘play the ISPs against one another’ trick to try & get some service in.

Meanwhile, I’ve been grabbing a little bit of time here & there at a cafe in the middle of Wroc?aw (right on Plac Grunwaldski — photos to arrive on my blog sometime in the next couple of weeks) called Coffee Planet. They have a wifi connection here which I’ve been able to poach in order to get mail access & download some sample data from which to build the application. Until today, though, I’ve not had enough time here to really get everything sorted out, so I’ve been working with a small data set at home, making modifications against the internal database only.

Now, however, not only do I have a complete download of the Morfunk Basecamp site, but I’ve been able to make the first official update from an iPhone ! Well, from the iPhone simulator, at least. See if you can guess which one it was from the attached picture.

More coming Real Soon Now (promise)

Getting the iPhone 3G

Posted July 14 in News

So, I managed to get myself an iPhone 3G on Friday, after almost eleven hours of waiting. The Canadian iPhone launch was rather problematic, and this was hampered by limited numbers of the device, and the inability to actually purchase at an Apple store (with all the nice geek porn to look at while waiting). Instead, with Rogers’ insistence on confining the launch to a single store in each major city, most people were convinced (as was I) that this was the only way to guaranteeably get our hands on the device within the next few weeks. It was only later on in the day when it was revealed (to us at least) that more stock was arriving as soon as Tuesday. That, and we found out that other stores had much more stock than the expected ’10-ish’.

How Not To Do iPhone UI

Posted July 3 in Devlog

Stevens Creek Screenshot

Stevens Creek Software is apparently a “leading provider of software solutions for the iPhone”. This in itself is fairly interesting, since as there are no official iPhone applications available yet, one is left to wonder how they know they’re in such a position.

I can’t see it lasting though; if they continue to show their PalmOS roots as they do here, they’ll be the first company to get negative download scores. People will send in requests that the app be removed from the store, because seeing it by accident gave their children nightmares & triggered an epileptic attack in their dog.

For the record, when I wrote PalmOS apps they didn’t look like the second coming of Windows 3.0.

An Expedition

Posted June 22 in News

A brief introduction. My name’s David Kaneda and I’m addicted to Basecamp.

Basecamp is a web-based project management application from 37signals. It’s got a whole bunch of features, like messages, to-do’s, milestones, and time tracking — all of which made better by the fact that it’s online and collaborative.

The name Outpost comes as it is a literal remote extension of a basecamp, in terms of an expedition. Outpost will allow users to manage their projects from literally anywhere: at a client’s office, on the train, or even offline, should you be caught on a plane with no service. It will automatically sync with Basecamp when necessary to provide the fastest and most convenient way of managing messages, tasks, and deadlines.

After working for several years as a web designer, this is my first attempt at creating software. It would be nothing without the help of my development partner, Jim Dovey. An expedition indeed.

Just a quick update to say we've been a little under the radar due to development and travel. Keep an eye on the blog over the next week...
